About the Internship Program
The Ellison Internship on Material Cultural and the Archive convenes a cohort of undergraduate scholars for an immersive experience in archival research and material culture. This intensive two-week paid internship brings together intercollegiate cohorts of students from across the Bard network, and through our existing relationships with HBCUs. Interns spend one week participating in a curated series of visits to leading cultural institutions in New York City. They then spend a week in Washington, DC, engaging the Ralph Ellison Archive at the Library of Congress, and receiving immersive training in archival practices while conducting an independent research project pursuant to Ralph Ellison.
As part of the program, interns spend one week absorbing the cultural life of New York City.
At the Bard NYC campus, students visit with anchor NYC cultural institutions such as the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Jazz at Lincoln Center, The Studio Museum in Harlem, the Apollo Theater, and the Harlem School of the Arts. Over the course of the week, the student cohort will also participate in an immersive training in material culture curation and open-source/public archival practices. In the second week, students will travel to the Library of Congress in Washington, DC to meet with and engage in the work of independent research, while also digitizing portions of the Ellison archive.
Students will earn a stipend of $1200. Travel, food, and lodging will be covered by the Center. The first year of this internship comprises six students, a cohort size that will increase by two students every year.
